How to get around
The city’s compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot, especially in areas like the Old Town. Here, many attractions, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance. Certainly, the charming streets and vibrant atmosphere add to the experience as well. Walking is the preferred way of getting around for most visitors, including myself. However, bike rentals and e-scooters are also available for those who want to cover more ground or explore areas farther from the city center.

To get from Warsaw to Krakow, I recommend taking an early morning train for a smooth and efficient journey. The ride takes around 2.5 – 3 hours. So be prepared for an early start to make the most of your day in Krakow. It’s best to purchase your tickets a few days before to avoid any last-minute hassle. Furthermore, I suggest arriving at the station at least 30 minutes ahead of time to ensure you find your platform with ease.
I booked a high speed train called Pendolino and was pleasantly surprised by the train itself. It was modern, comfortable, and even came with added bonuses like outlets at each seat.
What to do & see in one day in Krakow
🚆 Start Your Journey: Kick off your adventure by catching an early morning train from Warsaw to Krakow. The ride will take around three hours. However, if you get up early you will still have plenty of time to explore Krakow.
☕ Breakfast in the Old Town: Take a stroll through the charming streets of Krakow’s Old Town, passing iconic landmarks like St. Florian’s Gate. For breakfast or a morning coffee, I highly recommend going to Camelot Cafe or Camelot Lulu. Both are cozy spots perfect for starting your day.
⛪ St. Mary’s Church and Market Square: Next, head over to St. Mary’s Church, one of Krakow’s most famous landmarks. Spend some time wandering around the beautiful Market Square, soaking in the atmosphere, and if you’re up for it, climb the tower for a panoramic view of the city.
🏰 Walk to Wawel Castle: From the Market Square, take a leisurely walk down Grodzka Street towards Wawel Hill. Once there, explore the grounds of the majestic Wawel Cathedral, a symbol of Polish heritage and royal history.
🕍 Explore the Jewish Quarter: After Wawel Castle, make your way to the historic Jewish Quarter, Kazimierz. Visit significant sites like the Old Synagogue and Schindler’s Factory to learn more about Krakow’s Jewish heritage. This area is also known for its trendy cafes, street art, and vibrant atmosphere.
🥖 Lunch at Okrąglak: For lunch, try a zapiekanka at Okrąglak. This classic Polish baguette, topped with a variety of ingredients, is a popular street food and a must-try while in Krakow.
🌉 Cross the River: After lunch, cross the Vistula River and visit St. Joseph’s Church, an often overlooked yet beautiful example of Gothic architecture. While you’re on this side of the river, take some time to explore the surrounding neighborhood. Compared to the bustling Old Town it has a more laid-back vibe.
🚶♂️ Head back to Krakow’s Old Town to make your way toward the train station. If time permits, you can also spend a bit more time exploring. Wander through the charming streets, soak in the lively atmosphere, or stop for a drink at one of the many cafés around Market Square to unwind before your journey back to Warsaw.
🚆 Return to Warsaw: As your day winds down, head back to the train station for your return trip to Warsaw. I recommend grabbing a sandwich or snack for the journey home, as you’ll likely be hungry after a full day of sightseeing!
